CBD - Royal Botanicals Observatory Cafe

CBD - Royal Botanicals Observatory Cafe

Observatory cafe

Royal Botanic Gardens, Birdwood Ave, South Yarra (edge)

Like it.
22nd April 2013.

If you live in Melbourne or are visiting with young kids, you must visit the Children's Gardens in the Royal Botanical Gardens.  It has a pond, small but delightful walk with a mini viewing platform, vegetable garden, sand pit, and water fountains that go on when the weather is over 28degrees which is awesome for your littlie to squeal with excitement over.

After which, you can take a little stroll to the Observatory Cafe for some refreshments.  It is a good cafe with predictable drinks and food, pricey for what it is but you are in a premier location.

Bring a bike for your little one to run around with while you relax at the cafe.

Coffee
Having been many times here, we have had chai, soy cappuccino, long macchiatos, moccachinos.  The barista is consistent, and coffees are decent.  The chai is of the powdered variety so I would pass if you are looking for something more home-brewed.

Food
Sweet treats here are really sweet, so if sharing with the littlie, I would suggest the flourless orange cake, banana/apple bread, muffin special as they are less sweet than the other cakes on show.

Lunch options are good - salads, frittatas, fruit salads, a whole array to please everyone. I would describe it as steady decent lunch-time food at a price.

Service
It's a queue up, pay and collect place, so very casual.

Ambience
There are long tresel tables inside, as well as tables for 2/4/6 inside and outside.  Sun-umbrellas outside to help provide shade in summer.  There is a grassy spot opposite the cafe where you can have a picnic.

There are also dog water bowls for those who have brought their pooch along for the walk.  (Note that you cannot bring your dog into the children's garden).

Children Services
There is a small children's menu and change room around the corner.  There are no high chairs but there is plenty of space for prams.
Safe open space for playing - both paved or grass makes it a nice relaxing half day outing.
